MTS is the file format of the AVCHD (Advanced Video Coding High Definition) standard used by camcorder manufacturers such as Sony, Panasonic and Canon for HD video recordings. The files deliver excellent image quality but are not directly compatible with many devices, editing programmes and media players. With file-converter-online.com, MTS files can be converted to the universal MP4 format directly in the browser without installation.

Technical background to the MTS format:

The MTS format was developed jointly by Sony and Panasonic in 2006 as part of the AVCHD standard. The aim was to create a format that would enable high-definition video recordings on available storage media such as CF and SD cards, memory sticks and internal hard drives. At a time when HD video still placed considerable demands on storage (especially storage space and speed).

Technically, MTS is based on the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC codec for video compression, while the audio format is usually AC-3 (Dolby Digital) or uncompressed PCM. This combination delivers image and sound quality that was on a par with professional formats when it was introduced.

Despite its technical qualities, the MTS format has not been able to establish itself outside the world of camcorders. There are many reasons for this: Windows Media Player requires additional codec packages, and compatibility on macOS is also limited. Free video editing programmes such as earlier versions of DaVinci Resolve or OpenShot often cannot import MTS files directly because decoding the interlaced material is computationally intensive. Mobile devices also offer virtually no support for the MTS format. Anyone who wants to share an MTS video from their camcorder directly via Messenger or watch it on their tablet will quickly reach their limits. The MP4 format has a clear advantage here.

Anyone who finds an MTS file on their computer today has in most cases transferred it from a camcorder.

Where else do MTS files come from?

MTS files are typically created when using:

  • Camcorders from Sony (Handycam), Panasonic and Canon, for example
  • Digital cameras with video function (e.g. Panasonic Lumix)
  • Older generation action cameras
